Overview
I have been spending my time browsing through the list of plugins on bbPress.org, when I’ve realized that it is such a great forum platform, but it deserves more attention. I’ve have downloaded and implemented bbPress on several websites which I own, tested it and find it very install and use, but lacks plugins that will further extend its capabilities. I am a programmer, but never had a chance to program plugins before. Because I’ve liked bbPress so much, I have decided to give my self some time to learn how to develop plugins for BBPress and today I present to you my first BBPress plugin called “Easy Video Embed”.
I’ve developed this plugin because when I’ve used bbPress, I’ve found that there are some video embed plugins that weren’t compatible with the latest version which I’ve installed, bbPress 1.02. furthermore, I wanted a plugin which will let me embed a wide variety of Tube videos, not just YouTube videos. So I’ve decided to develop “Easy Video Embed”, so I can create the plugin that I’ve always wanted for my bbPress forums. I liked the idea of embedding videos using bbCode, using brackets. Furthermore, I wanted it to be simple to implement and therefore use only a single bbCode for implementing video tube on forum posts. I will continue improving the plugin in the near future, but I need you corporation in order to spend my time on features and improvements that YOU WANT, not what I think that I should add. It means that I need your comments, and I need your to report any issues, bugs or incompatibility that you encounter using the “Easy Video Embed” plugin.
Terms of Use: I am testing this plugin on the latest bbPress version (1.02). This plugin is currently in beta and I don’t and will not take any responsibility on any damage that might happen when you install and use this plugin. Remember this is a plugin in beta stage therefore you agree to install it and use it on your own risk and it is expected that you understand the accompanying risks with installing such new plugin.

So enough talking, lets go to business. you probably ask yourself why use “Easy Video Embed” and what it offers to any bbPress user, so lets start.
About Easy Video Embed (beta) Plugin
Easy Video Embed Plugin will allow any user to easily embed streaming/buffered tube videos, directly into forum posts. All you need to do is to install the plugin, by uploading to your bbPress “my-plugins” folder and activate it. when you activate the plugin, you will have a new menu link that will get you to the admin section. The current version Easy Video Embed 0.1b, will allow you basically two things: Check a checkbox that credits the author for its hard work (Don’t you think I deserve it?) and you can always unchek it if you like not to credit me 
, this will put a link at the footer that points to this plugin post so other people can enjoy it too. The second option lets you decide the width and height for each video source (YouTube, Vimeo, Revver, etc.). After you finished setting the sizes (you can always use the default ones), click the “Save” button at the bottom to save it.

How To Install & Activate the Plugin?
In order to activate the plugin, you need to follow these steps:
- Download the Plugin (click the link to download the latest version 0.1b). By downloading the file you understand that you are installing it at your own risk and understand the the author of this plugin will take NO responsibility of any kind for any damage that this plugin may cause.
- Extract the RAR compressed file on your desktop (or any other place that is convenient to you) using WinRAR software, which you can download from here.
- Upload the folder that you’ve just extracted (the folder that contains the plugin files) to ‘my-plugins’ folder on your hosting server using your favorite FTP Client software. Note: You should upload it to your ‘my-plugins’ folder, not the ‘bb-plugins’ folder.
- Login to your bbPress forum administration panel, using your Username & Password. After that click ‘Admin’ link to enter your bbPress forum administration panel.
- Click ‘Plugins’ in the left menu in your bbPress forum administration panel.
- Activate the plugin by clicking on the ‘Activate’ link in the “Easy Video Embed” plugin row. After that you will see the text changing for ‘Activate’ to ‘Deactivate’. You can deactivate the plugin at any time by clicking on ‘Deactivate’. If the activation is successful, you will see a “Easy Video Embed plugin activated” note at the top of the page.
- Installed! – the plugin was installed and ready to Rock. On the left side menu, you will see the “Easy Video Embed” sub-menu item, on which you can click to change the plugin preferences.

As I said earlier, you can leave the options with their default width and height values or change it to the size that you desire to embed the videos.
How to Embed Videos in bbPress Posts?
In order to embed videos in your post, use the video bbCode tag. It is very simple, you just put the video source URL (Internet address) between the video tags, like that:

REPLACE ‘xx’ with ‘tt’. Wordpress automatically replace it with videos, so I changed it.

Browsers Compatibility
I haven’t done any in-depth comparability checking, but I’ve checked it out on Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) and Firefox 3.6 and it seems that it works fine. I would be glad if you test it on other browsers and report to me if something is not working or any suggestion to fixing browser compatibility problems. Again, use the “Report Bugs” form, in order to send me bug reports/errors or any issue with the plugin.
Plugin Options Page
When you activate the plugin, you will get to “Easy Video Embed” plugin’s options page. In there you can make the following changes.
- Credit the author (me
), by checking this box and allowing the plugin to put a link in the footer of your forum page. This link will link to the plugin page, so other users can enjoy this plugin too. It is enabled by default, but you can uncheck it to remove the credit link at any time. You are not obligated to credit the author, but I would be glad if you do. I want the plugin to become popular, so I have more motivation in spending more times in developing more and more very useful plugins, and updating this plugin in the future. - Change videos dimensions (pixels) – You can change width & height for every video source, So YouTube embedded videos can be 500×400 pixels for example and Metacafe videos (all of them), will be embedded in 300×200 pixels. When you change the size of a video source, all the videos from that source will be changed in your forum. In this current release, you can’t individually change width and height settings for each video, maybe in the next version.Put ONLY NUMBERS! in the text fields, not pixels:ex.

After you made your changes, click the save button to save the new video size settings and check it in your forum.
bbPress Version Compatibility
I’ve checked “Easy Video Embed” plugin on bbPress v1.02 (latest version) and it WORKS! – of course I need further testing to see if there are any problems. But for that I need you guys. You can help me out to test it on older bbPress versions, so I can update and report users on which bbPRess versions the plugin works.

I recommend first downloading and activating the plugin on a development bbPress installation, not a live installation. I installed bbPress v1.02 on this host to test the plugin, so you can take a look and see how it works on bbPress v1.02. Again I am not taking any responsibility for any damage of any kind that this plugin might cause. I tried my best to make it as safe as I can, but again, I need your professional suggestions to make it a better plugin.
